Max wasn't expected to win in 2018, but the combination of a compelling personal story and strong Democratic turnout propelled him to an upset victory. He serves on the Homeland Security and Veterans’ Affairs Committees.
Max was awarded the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his service in Afghanistan. After completing his military service, he was chief of staff of a non-profit healthcare organization that works with underserved New Yorkers. His campaign video “Chopper” is worth watching.
Max credits his mother, a community college professor, with instilling in him a love of public service, and modeling a can-do attitude. He survived the attack in Afghanistan because of the improved vehicle he was driving. “(Congress) put the right people in a room … gave them resources … put partisanship aside, and … said, ‘Solve the damn problem!’ That used to be the story of this country … it’s time we do that for every other problem ...”
In April, 2020, Max, a captain in the National Guard, began voluntary reserve duty on Staten Island, where he oversaw logistical operations for a repurposed 252-bed facility for patients with COVID-19. Max's efforts were praised by hospital administrators who remarked on his "brass tacks" approach to management. "You could tell he'd been in the military," said the executive director of the project. " ... We opened a hospital in five days."
Max’s opponent is New York State Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, who has stated: “I will stand with President Trump ... as we battle the creep of Socialism and fight to Make America Great Again!” She organized a Goya food drive following comments in a Rose Garden ceremony by the CEO of GoyaFoods, who said: "We're truly blessed ... to have a leader, like President Trump, who is a builder."
Rose said he "could not be happier to welcome" Malliotakis to the race: "... she's a fraud who represents everything we hate about our politics."
The race is rated a tossup, and Max needs our support to win re-election.
